Hard-right parties prospered in many European elections in 2024 and they have been buoyed by Donald Trump’s victory in November. They govern in Austria, Hungary, Italy and Slovakia. The coming year will see general elections in Germany, Norway and Czech Republic, a presidential poll in Romania and possibly fresh parliamentary elections in France. Everywhere, insurgent populists and nationalists will challenge incumbents.

Already the balance within the EU is changing, but 2025 could see the pendulum swinging further. That, in turn, could have implications for EU policy in important areas, in a year when Europe is struggling for growth, the war in Ukraine could take a decisive turn and Trump seems set to upend the global trading order with wide-ranging tariffs.

Join Oxford Analytica’s conference call on February 5, where our experts will address several questions:

  • How do governing populists and nationalists in Europe differ, and how have their fortunes changed in the last two years?
  • What is the outlook for such politicians and parties in elections in the next 12-15 months?
  • What impact have they had on EU policy towards Ukraine, the rule of law, immigration and decarbonization?
  • What impact might they have in the next year, especially if more elections go their way?
