This year marks the 75th anniversary of CQ and the 65th anniversary of Roll Call. This is a tremendous accomplishment for any organization. For the past seven decades, CQ and Roll Call have been trusted to deliver the right news, at the right time - to every congressional office, all three branches of government, the vast majority of the agencies, and thousands of organizations.
CQ and Roll Call have earned a reputation for delivering comprehensive, accurate and objective reporting. In a sign of the news organization’s quality, journalists at CQ and Roll Call have been awarded the prestigious Dirksen Award for Distinguished Reporting of Congress 10 times since 1980.
Nelson and Henrietta Poynter founded Congressional Quarterly in 1945 to help readers understand the real-life implications of their government by providing in-depth information about congressional activity. The Poynters wanted local newspapers around the country to have in-depth information about their lawmakers to inform their reporting and educate their readers. Nelson Poynter summed up the reasons for founding CQ, saying “The federal government will never set up an adequate agency to check on itself, and a foundation is too timid for that. So it had to be a private enterprise beholden to its clients.”
Ten years later, Sid Yudain founded Roll Call a newspaper that would grow to be considered indispensable for members of Congress and their staff for providing timely news, objective facts and analysis, and coverage of elections and the politics of legislation. His passion for journalism drove him to establish numerous newspapers throughout his career, beginning with the one he started in elementary school. But it was during his tenure as press secretary for family friend Rep. Albert P. Morano (R-Conn.) that Yudain launched Roll Call, his most significant enterprise, on a budget of $90.
Since these two powerhouses came together in 2009, CQ Roll Call has continued to provide trusted, authoritative, and nonpartisan journalism to its readers. In 2018, CQ Roll Call was brought into FiscalNote to provide our customers with the best political reporting in DC.
CQ and Roll Call journalists have won more Dirksen awards for distinguished reporting of Congress than any other organization.
